Curriculum for Primary level is using the integrated thematic learning method. This kind of learning came from thematic approaches as basic matter and learning activity. Theme created can connect to the learning process, both in specific subject and between subjects.
The characteristics of integrated thematic learning is focusing on learner-centered learning, provide the direct experience, separation between subjects invisibly, multiple subjects presented in one subject study concept, flexible, and the learning result can be evolve according to the interests and the needs of the learners.
Integrated Thematic Learning includes:
- Determine the theme.
- Integrate the theme of the prevailing curriculum by promoting dimensions of attitudes, knowledge and skills.
- Design your lesson plan. This stage includes organizing resources and extra-curricular activities in order to demonstrate the thematic activity.
- Group discussion. Which give the opportunity to participate in achieving every perspective of theme. This may encourage teachers and students in exploring the subject.
Integrated thematic learning assured as one of the effective learning methods. This learning method is able to facilitate and touch emotionally, physically and academically all integrated. The integrated thematic learning has characteristics to guide students to be able to reach the higher level of thinking or optimizing multiple intelligences of thinking skills.
Students at the beginning of the class are thinking in a holistic way (whole/one unit). They are not able yet to understand abstract concepts. Benefits of thematic learning are to create a comfortable and joyful atmosphere in class. Using teamwork groups, collaboration, study groups, and problem solving strategy to encourage student to solve the problem.
